WEEKEND BOX OFFICE : Ninja Turtles 2' Limps to Top Spot, me before you shines

Despite claiming the top spot at this
weekend's box office, Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows had a disappointing debut,
earning just $35.3 million.
This is particularly concerning for Paramount, having spent
a whopping $135 million on Out of the Shadows. "I don’t
think we’ve ever seen a sequel slump of this caliber,"
Exhibitor Relations analyst Jeff Bock said (via Variety ).
"These films aren’t as good as the first ones, and they’re
suffering at the box office."
Last weekend saw the release of two underwhelming
sequels in X-Men: Apocalypse and Alice Through the
Looking Glass. The former slipped to second this weekend
with $22.3 million, while the Alice sequel dropped to fourth
with $10.7 million. Placing third was New Line's new
female-targeted film Me Before You, which earned $18.3
million.
