WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: 'Sully' Soars With $35.5 Million Debut


Warner Bros.' new film Sully took
first place at the domestic box office, earning $35.5 million during its opening weekend.
As noted by The Hollywood Reporter , Clint Eastwood's new film, starring Tom Hanks, set a new September high for the weekend debut of an adult drama.
Additionally, Sully had the second most successful opening of Eastwood's career, following American Sniper's $107.2 million haul. Internationally, the film earned $9.5 million, making for a current global total that stands at $45 million.
Meanwhile, Sony's new thriller from director Jon Cassar, When the Bough Breaks, placed second during its opening weekend, earning $15 million. Following in third was prior box office leader Don't Breathe, with $8.2 million and Suicide Squad in fourth with $5.7 million.
Rounding out the top five was the new animated feature The Wild Life, which earned $3.4 million. This weekend also saw the debut of the D.J. Caruso-directed horror
film The Disappointments Room, which flopped with $1.4 million.
